Well, it is The Best Thing I Did In Gaming This Week. It was originally created by a friend of mine, Adam Riback (I think that's how you spell it) for a radio show called Triforce Radio. It is exactly what it sounds like, the best thing I did related to gaming this week. Whether it's a sick mlg-pro-360-no-scope, crazy antics, or a new game that I installed it all qualifies as something that could be great.

This week, thanks to the Steam sale, I finally bought and installed Transistor, by Super Giant Games. I assume that just about everything has been said about this game, but I'm going to add my two cents. I have successfully been ablet to avoid all reviews, videos, and possible spoilers about Transistor. I have only gotten a sense of immense approval from the gaming community at large.

Walking into the unknown
I had no idea what to expect, other than an isometric action game with some RPG elements vaguely like Bastion. I have been blown away so far. The turn based combat is really interesting, despite it coming from left field with very little introduction. It doesn't feel like turn based combat. It is fast, and impactful. I hate turn based strategy games. Well, that's not entirely true. I did enjoy one called Legion way back in the early 90s on my family's Mac, but that is besides the point. Transistor is able to keep my attention in a way that no other turn based game really has. It almost reminds me of Parasite Eve where you're waiting for your "turn" to come back around and unleash holy fury on your enemies.
A well crafted experience
One reason for why I enjoy their style of combat is the reasoning behind it. Each encounter is described as a process, and your weapon is almost like a hack tool that you use to destroy your robot attackers. I find it really believable in the setting of the game, and it provides a new experience from my normal stable of games. As usual for SuperGiant Games the soundtrack is great, and the environment sucks you into it with its colors and art style. I don't find the music as memorable as Bastion, but it fits the world really well. It is haunting and mysterious, just like the story that is unfolding around you.
I'm really enjoying Transistor for its story telling, gameplay, environment and music. That is why playing it is the best thing I did in gaming this week.
