I spent $3.74 on Valient Hearts: The Great War by Ubisoft Montpellier
This is a story driven side scroller set in the first world war. It follows the story of a number of different people as they fight and try to survive on different sides of the war. It is a very well told story. Within the first level it brings the feel hammer down hard on you. It is very hard to put down because of the extremely sympathetic characters.
The gameplay is simple, but solid. The controls are responsive, and the art style is excellent as well. It is done in a comic book form that softens some of the brutality of the war, while showing the emotions of the characters really well.
One reason why I think the story has spoken so much to me is because of a certain youtube channel that I have been following. The Great War follows the events of WWI as they happened one hundred years ago. Each week they release a video summarizing what happened during the war that week. I didn't realize how little I knew about this war until I started watching this documentary. WWI was intensely brutal, and knowing that as I am playing these characters that I have come to care for only serves to give the story more impact. If you haven't watched it I highly recommend checking out their channel.
Well, that is $3.74 down, $13.46 to go. I will keep you updated on how I do, and I hope you are learning that there are abundant opportunities to play games on a tight budget.
